What are the different types of open access journals?
Answer
Gold OA journals: all content is OA, and all authors must pay an Article Processing Charge (APC).
Hybrid journals: subscription-based journals, but individual authors have the option to pay an APC to have their article published OA.
Diamond/Platinum OA journals: all articles are published OA, but with no APCs required from authors. These journals are typically funded by organizations, institutions, or other initiatives.
Green OA: also known as "self-archiving," this refers to the practice of making a version of the published article (usually the pre-publication manuscript) available OA in an institutional or disciplinary OA repository.
See the APC Support page for APC-free publishing and APC discounts available for U of A corresponding authors.
