What is a call number and how do I use it?
Answer
A call number is like an address for a book so that you can locate the item on the shelf. The University of Alberta Library organizes books using the Library of Congress (LC) classification system. Books on the same topic will have similar call numbers. The call number can be found below the record for an item in our library catalogue, along with which library it is in, and if it's on the shelf or checked out.
We have a short description of how call numbers work on our search guide. Check out our poster to learn how to read a call number.
If you are still unsure, feel free to ask a staff member at any of our service desks or online!
